I have been leaving the computer on all of the time lately after I read that it's the way to go. But at times it seems sluggish when I click on an object. To correct it, I re-boot, and then it speeds up.
Don't know if any of the following could cause the slow responses; Google Task Bar with Pop-up Blocker-Spybot Search-Norton Anti Virus 2004.
Could it be a hard drive problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi Larry
Actually, Windows appreciates it if you reboot atleast once a day to recoup the resources it's lost along the way.
Can you tell us a little more about your computer? What O/S, Brand, how much Ram?
Have you been through msconfig to stop any uneccessary apps from loading at start up?

    Hi Daizy,
Thanks much for your ideas. The re-boot once a day sounds good to me. Seems that it works better when I Shut Down every night and boot in the morning.
    I have Windows 98 SE
    733 megahertz Intel Pentium lll
20 Gigabytes Usuable Hard Drive Capacity
    Thanks again!

    Hi Again,
Been to msconfig and have Start Ups down to a minimum.
    127 mg RAM
Also at times get the following DOS message when booting:
An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0031238 i VxD_ _ _.This was called from 0028:Coo2F9DD in VxD_ _ _.
Haven't a clue what that means.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi again Larry
Can you try and get us the full and complete error message next time it happens? Have you been through device manager looking for any nasty yellow splats?

    Hi Again,
Not smart enough to follow your directions on Device Manager and yellow splats. What is the procedure and what do I look for. Got to Device Manager via System, but had all pluses on the line up. No yellow splats!
Will look for more info on that DOS message the next time it appears. Many thanks!
    Larry O.

    Reboot early and often.

I used to tell people who were having performance issues with W98 on business systems which ran 24/7 to use the Following plan:

1] Reboot before login at begining of shift.
2] Reboot on returning from lunch.
3] Reboot as a logoff at end of shift.

Also if Win98 is not restarted at least once per calendar day the registry backups that it is supposed to make do not get made.

And the reg backups can be helpfull ( if kept up to date ) if the system does developes problems. It is not a cureall by any means but it can help.

In case you have heard ( or read ) that 98 backs up the reg on every boot or restart That is not true It only makes one per calander day but only if windows is restarted in some way
