My system is snappy once I get to the desktop, but this takes about 30 minutes.

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Removing Spyware & Viruses forum, sorry for the 2 day wait for a reply.

I have looked over your log and have not found anything to indicate any problems.

Did the problem begin recently, perhaps coinciding with any Windows updates, or any additions to the system, be they software or hardware?

There are however a few minor items we can fix using HJT, unrelated to malware.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157

Reboot, run HJT, if the above are gone, no need to repost with new log.

    Everything seems fine...

I got rid of those start page hijacks but boot performance is as slow as ever.

    Detailed System info:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?cc=us&dlc=en&product=326841&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
    Windows XP Home Edition
    Pentium 4 2.66GHz "Northwood "
    512MB of PC2700 DDR RAM
120GB IDE Hard Drive Spinning at 5400RPM with DMA set to max
Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440 (only AGP 4x speeds due to motherboard limitations)

    I have:
    - A custom theme called "Royale Noir "
    - Norton AntiVirus 2007
    - Sygate firewall
    - Some powertoys (Cool Alt-Tab switch, Cleartype tuner, and Tweak UI)
    - Microsoft Office 2000
    - Windows Live Messenger
    - Internet Explorer 7
    - Windows Media Player 11
    - Acronis True Image 7
    - Canon's Zoombrowser EX
    - iTunes & Quicktime (qqtask.exe can't be stopped from starting with Windows)
    - WinRAR
    - MSN Explorer & annoying Windows Messenger have been disabled/ uninstalled
    - Steam & just under 20GB of games and game content
    - 5000 photos in "My Pictures" clocking in at just under 5GB
    - A few hundred music files under iTunes (about 2.25GB)
    - System restore is allowed 12% of my hard drive sapce, which is according to Windows: 13,735MB

Hard drive usage is 43.9GB out of 111GB, 67.6GB free. Defragged.

Why does my boot take 30 minutes?

I don't know. Only recently i've noticed it take this long. I usually leave my computer on standby for weeks and during occasional times it goes down (power outages/ circuit trip/ bluescreen automatically going to shutdown), I leave for a snack.

Ok, so lets try and figure it out, as you stated, it was 'only recently' it started. What changes did you make? Have you tired not using standby and just changing your power settings to turn off monitor and HDs at certain times.

This does not sound like any sort of malware problem, I would suggest you post over in Windows XP forum, more likely some sort of software\]hardware problem.

    Yay!

I've fixed the problem by replacing Norton AntiVirus 2007 with NOD32. Now I boot in 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes :)

Wow, that's an extreme even for Norton. Glad you solved that tho, it sure would have driven me nuts.
