Slow Wireless Connection

My wireless connection is slower than what it's supposed to be. I use Verizon FiOS, which is at 20Mbps when I use an ethernet connection. That usually means my download rate is from 1mb-1.5mb. But when I go wireless, it's only around 200kb. I always have an excellent connection and use a 54MBPs.

 

Do you believe in the tooth fairy ?
The number 54 mb/s on the box has nothing to do with reality
Your limiting factor in most user's cases is their internet connection not the wireless speeds.
Wireless speeds at most are 1/2 of the stated maximum ( networking overhead)
Speed drops off with distance
After 30 feet it drops off like a stone ( g and b)
Change the channel of the router from the default 6 to any other channel
Channel 1 and 11 are first picks
You may have a neighbors rogue signal drifting in and causing interference
You may not even see it in the windows wireless utility
Netstumbler may see it
Change the ssid from the default - even if to change a digit
If you think that you have an intruder on your system turn on the encryption
Make sure that the router is high and uncluttered
Basements are not a good place for wireless routers
You may want to move the router - even a foot or so over
Also if you have only g network adapters change the signal to g only
Check the wireless speed setting in the router control panel as well

In most cases even the older b wireless is faster than most internet users connection speeds
The faster speeds on the box will not help you with internet speeds but rather with transfers of large files within your home network
Wired connections are always faster than wireless , although wireless is very high tech and impressive
You might also want to look into powerline ethernet adapters if the remote computer is staying put - say on a desk , rather than a mobile laptop

 

Is that a typo?
If you have a 20Mb connection your download speed should be 20Mbps.

 

Ahh didn't notice the Capitol "B" Because it isn't there.

20 Mb = approximately 2.5 MB

I always try to keep my bits and Bytes consistent when talking speeds.
