Sometimes when I open files or folders in windows explorer,it takes a long time to open them.Often it will stop responding.I'm pretty positive I don't have any malware;I scan quite often with various security tools.(ex.super anti spyware, malware bytes,Iobit)I run these manually(not running all the time).I do have Trend Micro that does run at all times.I keep my machine clean and running smoothly.(except for this problem)There are very few things running at startup,no un-necessery tasks or services running;just the bare minimum. It's like windows is struggling to find what's in these folders.Anyone else have this issue?I'm running vista home prem Svc pak 2,Athlon dual-core,4 GB RAM.Any help much appreciated.:D

It's possible that you have a number of dead-ends in your registry. If you have installed and then uninstalled many programs, the removal does not always clean up all the scraps that are left in your registry. Your system wastes a lot of time looking for things that are no longer there.

I don't like messing with my registry, and have gotten zapped by some registry-cleaners that have promised to speed up my machine, but sometimes things get so snarled up that I have to do something. Two cleaners that have never harmed me are Free Registry cleaner 2,
    http://www.regsofts.com/free_registry_repair/
    and CCleaner
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download.

You might want to give them a try.

    I wouldn't run any "registry cleaner ".

Have a look here. Disable 3rd party shell extensions and see if this solves the problem.
