I have an EXTREMLY Slow startup. Once I get a desk top screen, I can not open anything for another 3-5 minutes. I have already run the following programs in an effort to clean out any problems that may be creating this issue.

    SpyBot SD
    Ad-Aware SE
    SpySubtract
    CWShredder
    AboutBuster
    HijackThis

Here is the log file for HijackThis:

Did the slow start just recently happen? Did you add the pc to a network or add any USB devices?

    Hello Jim,

Read thru this post on startups and how to handle them:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

You've got lots of stuff running that should be either on demand or not running at all, examples:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_06\bin\jusched.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

In that post there are links to application/process data bases, run your startups thru them and stop whatever doesn't need to run all the time.

How much RAM do you have?

    Regards - Charles

Nothing new has been added to the system. I do believe there are a number of programs running in the background but don't really know 100% how to find them all. I will take care of those items you listed and review the web page you referenced.

    My system has:

Total Physical Memory -- 256.00 MB
Available Physical Memory -- 44.86 MB
Total Virtual Memory -- 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory -- 1.96 GB

That post will tell you where the startups are and how to stop them. Task Manager will list all running processes: ctl - shift - esc in that sequence then > application and process tabs. If that doesn't do the trick, post back, there are other programs that will delve deeper into the startups.

Available Physical Memory -- 44.86 MB
That's a problem, if that's with you not doing much, the system is constantly using virtual memory, which means using disk to store parts of physical memory which in turn means constant disk accesses. XP should be run with at least 512 MB's of RAM, especially with the stuff you're running.

    Regards - Charles

Task Manager is TOUGH to figure out what is actually loading at startup. It just shows what is running. It does not show from where.

So unless you know EXACTLY what file you are looking for TM can be TROUBLE.

Unless I am looking at or reading it differently.

Startup Cop is MUCH easier to control and/or remove items for the startup group.

And it does not show any of the things that are actually needed by Windows. At least I have never seen any. ( like Explorer.exe etc. )

    Hi BB,

I wrote Task Manager will list all running processes: ctl - shift - esc in that sequence then > application and process tabs as a way of seeing what's running at any given moment - one of two parts of the whole :) .

You're right, listed startups can be seen in Startupcop or msconfig or autoruns or Mike Lin's programs I reference in the link.

    C:\Program Files\Plaxo\2.2.3.5\InstallStub.exe

Plaxo .. a on line automatic "contact List updater ".
Seems unusual to have a stub installer stay resident in task list?
If it does what is normally implied, would slow up initial windows loading.

Check this, I had trouble with a slow boot and slow programs loading and found out that my primary IDE channel was in the wrong transfer mode (PIO, instead of Ultra DMA Mode 5) to check it, Open Device Manager, click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controlers, then right click on Primary IDE Channel, select properties, then Advanced Settings. Look at your transfer mode(DMA if available) current transfer mode (Ultra DMA Mode 5) Some how mine got changed Worth a look

I think your ram is the problem. My friends computer had this problem and they only about around 40mb of memory avilable. Prehaps add some more ram this worked for me and the computer works find now.
