I have an HP Pavilion DV6400 laptop. It has an AMD Turion 64 x2 2GHz, 4Gb ddr2, and a 7400 rpm hd. New install of Windows 7 Ultimate. From the logon screen to Windows, it takes just over 21 seconds. After that it runs perfect, until I shut it down, then it goes through a long and strange flashing screen sequence I've never seen before.

Anybody got a clue what's causing this?

I realize a solid state HD would improve performance, but that's not the problem. I have an old Gateway laptop that opens and closes a lot faster than this one.

Hi Blufx. If you boot the computer into Safe Mode and shut it down from there does the same thing happen?

Yeah, that's what I figured, but even off a clean boot, it does the same thing. Over 20 seconds from logon to windows, and and when I click "shut down ", the screen goes black, then flashes 4 times during the shut down process. It too, takes a long time compared to other installations.

Lets try running Check Disk on the hard drive to repair any file system errors.

To do this click Start< Computer. Right click on your hard drive and click on Properties. Then once the hard drive properties dialog box opens, click on the Tools Tab. Under where it says Error-checking click on the Check Now button. Ensure that both the Automatically fix file system errors and the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors checkboxes are both checked. After that is done click on the Start button. Check Disk will ask you to schedule the disk check when you restart your computer. Click on yes to do this and then restart your computer to allow check disk to run.

See if there is any improvement after running Check Disk.

After full chkdsk, there's no difference.

When you attempt to shut down the machine where does the process stall? If you boot up the computer in Normal Mode and then on the log on screen, select shut down does the computer shut down normally from there?

No, it doesn't shut down normally. It does the same. During normal shut down, you may see a few screens of programs closing and such. This one goes black, and I see about a quarter second flash of those screens and several seconds between them. It's actually stalling between sequences in the shut down procedure. I never mentioned, during that slow start, from the logon screen the display goes black. The LCD still has power to it, just no video signal. It stays that way until Windows starts. Something else I just noticed, I had an update when I hit shutdown. It went straight to installing the update, when finished it shut off. No flashing.

I see what is going on now. Having the screen flash to black a few times seems rather strange.

The shutdown process looks like its taking a bit of time when you first click the shutdown button. Lets see if we can speed up the shutdown process so it doesn't hang for a few seconds.

    Click Start< All Programs< Accessories< Notepad.

Once Notepad opens, copy and paste the following text into Notepad:

    When done click File< Save.

When the Save As dialog box opens, you need to save the file with the following attributes otherwise it won't work.

    1. Filename: Shutdown.reg
    2. Save as type: All Files
    3. Encoding: ANSI

Save the file to your desktop and close Notepad. On your desktop you should see the Shutdown.reg file that you saved. Double click on it to run it. Click on Yes when asked if you want to merge this file into the registry. Then click on Ok to accept the changes. Reboot the computer for the changes to take effect. Now see if the shutdown process is any faster.

I tried that. I get the same start up and shut down on both accounts.

If you formatted the drive did you also load the chipset, etc. drivers?

Oh yeah, deleted previous partitions, installed, then got all the drivers from HP first thing. I've actually done it twice. I installed the Win 8.1 preview, but as anticipated, I didn't like it. But it did this with both installs of Win 7. It didn't do it with Win 8.1.
