 Hello guys and gals. I have a problem that is not unusual according to the discussion groups. I am running XP home edition, SP2, and it is slow slow slow. I am about ready to wipe the slate clean and reformat this thing, its that slow. Not just in booting up, but in operation also. Have about wore out registry first aid trying to get things straightned out, but to no avail. I notice a program at the end of this bbs called regcure. Anyone know if it is comparable or better that RFA? Have blocked things in msconfig. Wiped a batch of unused programs only using 15G out of a 96G HD and this cotton picker still acts like a typewriter ISO a computer. Using a P4 2.40GHz w/512MegRam. If I try regcure, can it be ran if RFA in on the machine or will I be getting a mess of conflicts or mess up my rehistry. Seems like RFA just wants to compress registry on the defrag end. Maybe someone using FRA out there can give me an idea as to what to do. ;) Thanks for any input.

    Tom ,
I too have XP HE SP2 and it was going very slow as well. I only had 256Mb RAM. I upped it to 1Gb and it seems like I have a new computer. IMO upping your RAM is the best cure for a slow computer.

    mickzer.

Believe it or not, I had given that some thought, I just wanted to wait and see what the reply was. You must really have been running slow at 256 when mine is at 526. Thanks for the reply.

Download ATF-Cleaner and run it selecting 'all' the first run. That generally speeds up a slow computer.

Of course more memory helps, too.

ATF Cleaner is a great little program. You should also make sure your system is clean re: malware as that can bring any machine to its knees. Although memory isn't going to hurt, if you have 512MB and a clean system, things should be pretty snappy. My suspicion is that something else is going on and depending on how you use it, that Registry First Aid could be adding to your problems.

    ;)

:) Thanks Roster, that is a very good little program, just like giving your machine a laxative;) I am really thinking about getting rid of that RFA also, just waiting for more input on the thing. It's not nice to fool with mother nature or you'r registry. But, ATF sure did clean this out and will soon be on the phone getting some more RAM. When I got to the defrag on RFA it asked about files that I wanted to compress, which I wasnt to crazy about so I stopped right there. I couldnt understand registry compression when I had 90+ gig left on the machine. Will keep you all posted. Thanks again.:) for the ATF tip sparrow.

    Hi, Tom F. :)

Since you seem to like messing with your registry (which some people certainly strongly discourage), you might want to try Macecraft's jv16 PowerTools which contains registry tools you may be interested in. I have used its Registry Cleaner utility on several occasions to scan/repair my registry without serious consequences (even the "Agressive" mode).

I once read a review of several registry cleaners somewhere that placed jv16 PowerTools' Registry Cleaner at/near the top of their list. (If I find the link, I will post it.)

Before you run jv16PT, it will update it's "cache" database depending on your computer's configuration (apparently to insure you get the safest cleaning possible). After you have jv16PT's Registry Cleaner scan your registry, you will get a report of your computer's current "System health ".

If you don't want to use jv16 PowerTools, Macecraft has a couple other smaller downloads (RegSupreme Pro registry cleaner and manager and RegSupreme standalone registry cleaner). I haven't used either of those though so I can't offer any opinions about those.

Caution/Disclaimer: "Repairing" your registry is potentially dangerous and could even render your computer unusable without reinstalling the operating system. Although I have never run into serious trouble with jv16 PowerTools, your mileage may vary. Use the information in this message at your own risk. :)

EDIT: I found the comparison review I mentioned earlier in this message.

The review is almost two years old though so the performance of the registry cleaners reviewed might have changed dramatically since then.

    Hello Tom F,

Is the system slow to boot in Safe mode?

What Firewall and AV running? Are you running a security Suite? Have you tried to disable them and see what the effect is?

In TM, anything stand out as far as RAM usage? Click on the headings to affect list order.

Sorry about hijacking this topic, but I just spent an hour reading it and the links. I am currently having my computer running a little slower than usual. So thinking of running ATF. So how does one create a system restore point? Yes my beginner colors are clearly shining through.... But figure I'd rather be safe than sorry and have a restore point before I run ATF.
    Thanks
    Alan

Quick way is help & support center, type 'system restore'.

Or start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore. Just follow prompts.
