I have just reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP and SP2 (plus motherboard drivers, ZoneAlarm, AVG, Eudora and Firefox) ONLY - nothing else installed at this time.

Prior to doing this I had a few issues (hence the drastic decison to reformat) including Windows being slow to display My Computer (opens window immediately but a few seconds to display the contents) and also slow to open a drive (double click on the icon and a few seconds before the contents are displayed).

I thought that a fresh installation would cure these problems. Any ideas?

    Oh yes my PC sepcs - P4 2.4Ghz, 1Gb SD333 ram, GeForce MX440 video, onbard (motherboard) sound, 2 X 80Gb 7200rpm ATA100 drives.

Might Try These little Registry Tweaks

    Windows XP Icon Cache

Are you experiencing icon lag, while browsing thru all your Start icons and programs? Do you have a smaller menu delay and your icons need ages to load? No need to give up.

Just delete the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data).

Automatically Refresh File Lists in Explorer

Change the value of UpdateMode in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update from 01 to 00

    Speed up menu display

"When using the start menu the you will notice a delay between different
tiers of the menu hierarchy. For the fastest computer experience possible I
recommend changing this value to zero. This will allow the different tiers
    to appear instantly. "

    Start Regedit & Navigate to

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.
Right on it and select Modify.
    Change the value to 200
    Reboot your computer!
