    Hello,

Anyone have any idears why windows xp has slow logon preformance? It takes about 1 minut to logon to a windows 2003 server!

All this run in a 100mbit ethernet.

    Kind regards

    Lars

    P.S.
If i use a winnt 4.0 insted of the win2k3 it runs fast.

If XP takes a long time to logon it probably doesn't find a service or something like that. It keeps on searching for the service.

Check that the DHCP and DNS server works properly.
Try to manually apply Network Settings a PC with XP, and login. If this reduces the login time, you'll need to check your DHCP and DNS settings.

    Hi,

I have now tryed anything with dhcp and dns, with no result. but I tryed to disable WINS under my XP client, then i work, but then i cant mappe any drives to the server, so what can cause WINS to make my client logon so slowly. 3 minuts time. and that is bad preformance. So anyone any ideers?

    Thanks again

    Regards
    Lars

    Hi,

Okay i finally got it to work, iam sorry I did't try a static setting on the dhcp on the client, so if i set a static ip in the dhcp setting that points to the domain server it works really good. but it will bed nice if it could work on a dynamic setting aswell. so have i misconfigureted my domain servers dns/dhcp settings or just it just have to be this way?

    Kind regards

    Lars

It should be a lot faster than that.

But the problem may be with what the XP workstations are trying to do rather than DNS/DHCP problems or anything directly to do with the 2K3 server.

By default the XP workstations will try to do two things while connecting
    - search the entire network for shared folders & printers
    - search for scheduled tasks

Both of these operations can seriously slow things down and usually you don't need or want XP doing either one.

To stop the folder/printer search, use the instruction from Here.

To stop the scheduled tasks part, on the XP PC

    start~run~regedit then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace.
    - Find a key named {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}.
    - Right click on it and delete it.
