Secure (https) sites load very, very slowly in Firefox (a little better in Sea Monkey). Are there ways to make https sites load faster? I called my satellite provider and changed one of the modem settings, but I don't see much of a change.

Do they load ok on IE ?

Secure website encrypt the data when sending to your browser & vice versa. Since you are on a satellite connection, your ISP is using data compression to give you greater speed. Since encrypted data cannot be compressed very much [if at all], you are facing this problem. Just a thought.

    My OS is XP.

Yes, the problem is same with IExplorer. Probably because Firefox uses Iexplorer as its base? Noticeably faster using Sea Monkey, but too many problems with SM. (I tried the Beta version, but it keeps crashing, so went back to FF.) And, yes, this is a problem with all secure sites, even when regular sites load in a flash.

Firefox & IE are two different [& competing] browsers.

I think the speed difference is due to compression. Sorry, nothing can be done about that.

I am not convinced this problem has anything to do with compression. The reason: I just installed Opera, which opens secure sites 5 times faster than FF or IE. Now if Opera only supported Roboform, I'd change browsers.

Opera is currently the speed champion of browsers [Safari is breathing down its neck] & would open sites much faster than either FF or IE.

If you are happy with Opera's speed, stay put with it.
