OK, I run into a weird problem that took some time to resolve.

I had been with a wireless Internet connection of 5/2Mbps for about 10 years, but finally needed more bandwidth.

I upgraded to a 60/5Mbps cable connection. As you may know I live in Malta (EU). Speeds to servers in the EU where just fine:

But speeds to the US where only at around 20/25%:

Any other PC on my network was doing just fine... If I plugged in another HD on my PC, speed was fine again... so it was a setting somewhere... but where/what?

My Windows install goes back nearly 10 years, but I have so many specific software and settings, it would take me weeks to reproduce on a fresh Windows install, + there's some software I doubt I find the installation files back...

Anyway, doing a full TCP/IP stack (netsh int ip reset) reset didn't even help.

After some more digging I came across the setting for Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level

Setting this to disabled is a suggestion to improve your speed, but for me, reversing it back to normal finally fixed my speed problems with servers in the US:

The command netsh interface tcp show global shows the current settings:

You just don't know when a setting you changed a long time ago might bite you in the ass ...

Interesting research, thanks for sharing but if/when I come across the same situation ... ... I guess I have forgotten all about it!

Yea, I was scratching my head why I would only have problems with US servers. I have a friend using the same cable provider, so I knew it wasn't their service...
