Slow Internet - Hijackthis Log

My internet surfing and downloading seems to be capped at around 20kb/s. Wonder if there is anything wrong with this log.

Three things wrong with the log.

1. You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. It's currently at version 1.99.1 and may show us something your version doesn't.

2. You have HijackThis in a temporary folder and it still has not been extracted from the zip file. (guess that's really 2 things )

3. Your machine is considerably behind on Windows Updates, and therefore open to many vulnerabilities for which there have been security patches issued to fix.

I recommend you go first go to Windows Update and accept all crititcal updates (choose the Express Install). Reboot when prompted and return for more, untill there are no more offered. Then open C: and make a new folder. Download HijackThis.exe from here and choose save, then direct it to the new folder. Post a new log when done.

Can we assume you're on dialup?

The reason I am behind on Windows update is when I install SP2, it does not detect my Internet for some strange reason. It can't connect to anything so I have to keep it at SP1. Which is strange, because I was on SP2 before I wiped my computer a couple of months ago.

I am not a dial-up user. I am with BT Broadband in the UK. I was on a 512kb/s connection until I was recently upgraded to 2.2mbit. The actual problem is that since the update my Internet has been going at dialup speed when surfing and downloading. I don't know what the problem is - my router sees the connection as 2.2mbit, BT have checked my line and its fine, but my Internet can't go fast anymore. Do you have any ideas? The reason I posted my log here was in case it was spyware making it go so so slow, and I didn't think it was. But you're the expert so I will get your analysis!!

Any idea how to fix my Internet speed? Here is the new HijackThis log (without updates) - I've unzipped the latest version and done that!

I see nothing out of whack in your log. Start with checking for updated drivers for your NIC. Check all network cables (unplug and re-connect). When you installed SP2, did the windows firewall activate, thus leaving you with both it and the Norton firewall running? If so, that could present some problems with accessing the internet.

I had a similar problem with a XP Pro machine lately and after much time I fixed it by playing around with the MTU settings on the router. I'm not sure how they changed and I set them to the original settings but that was where the problem was.
