I installed Windows 7 in a PC with a new 160 GB HD, New drive had not been used before?, owner upgrading from XP/ 40 GB HD, looking to increase drive capacity to enable graphic design by adding partitioned Slave drive, ( what would be the best total GB for this, as a starter? ).

Installation took well over 2 hours, now get very long start up and shut down.
Disk has about 90% free. Control Panel loads very slowlym
PC has over 220 system drivers according to System Info, what should I be looking for ?

Thanks lJ50, didn't give it a thought, should have done.
To Admin, I am running Piriform Speccy at the moment on the computer, do you want results of that or the 'System Information' System Drivers.?

Hook the old HD back up as Master then leave the NEW one unhooked then go to MS and see what it says about upgrading.

    To MrBill.
Please explain the reason for the suggestion that I re-con the old HD with XP on it,'unhook' the new HD and run the MS upgrade advisor from the old HD. I assumed this would not be required because Windows7 was being installed on a new HD.

To go to the link that was suggested in post # 2 to see if that machine is even capable of running Windows 7.

Thank you Mr Bill I will give that a try, however for reasons best known to itself, the new OS system is working , a little slow but improving, it seems that every time I start and the shut down it gets a little quicker, or is that my imagination ?. The system information shows about 160 system drivers now , it was 220 + at the start.
To Admin, your request to post specs of PC, I can provide the following Speccy scan, but if you need the system drivers list I will post them separately.
    System Spec,
    OS. Windows 7 Pro, 32 bit.SP1
CPU. Intel Celeron, Northwood 0.13 Technology.
    Motherboard. Micro-star, P4M266-8233 (socket 478 )
    RAM.5ir-MB. DDR 0136Mhz (3.5-3-3-6 )
    Graphics.LCD1960NXi (800x600 )
    Hard D. 149GB, Seagate sT 316025ace ATA
Optical Drives, Matshita DVD-ROM Sr-8584A ATA
    Audio. No audio card detected.
I hope these details will help.
    Spanner.

    Speccy is incomplete ....
That doesn't make sense - typo?
from from here. In practice more needed - never expect a computer to run an OS well on minimum specs.

    Processor speed ?? -
    Graphics -
That's the monitor, not the graphics card/chip.

Hence MrBill's post to run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. To put it bluntly you can't throw Wndows 7 into any old computer - there are basic requirements in terms of specs.

    Driver list NOT required.

Now the OS is running, (as it is ) should I run the MS Windows7 upgrade advisor, or will this be opening the stable door after the horse has bolted ?

Is it possible to run Windows 7 on a board with a 478 socket?

I have a 10 year old MSI - 6738 board, but according to Windows upgrade adviser, running Windows 7 would be difficult.

Lots of versions of Windows would run on some old junk PC's. But not very good. Seen where XP was pretty fast and then when upgrading just Windows 7 on the same PC, it was slower than molasses in January at the North Pole.

Just got update from Owner of PC, he has gone back to OS XP and is working ok, I think he is waiting for someone to buy him a new PC for Christmas, hope its not an ipad.
Incidentally his son (54) has read my posts/threads ( as guest) in Windows BBS, he recognised the problem and worked out that it was me by someone telling him my nickname when I was a kid.
Have to be careful what we write.
    Marking this Resolved .
    Thanks, Spanner
