I recently changed from dialup to broadband (cable modem). When typing input on certian sites (EBay), the time interval between hitting the ke and the character displaying can be seconds. Obviously vary annoying. It is not happening as I type this. It also shows up when I use Outlook (not Express). THe cable company says I need more memory to increase my free resources which are typically 40%. I have Windows 98 on a 400 MHz Pentium 3 using Windows 98. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

128Mb memory should be just fine for Win 98 - anything up to 512Mb improves performance, but this value should not generally be exceeded in Win 98.

I don't think you have a memory problem, but something is hogging your resources - I suspect Spyware.

Are you low on disk space? In any case I would 'clean up' the PC and delete any Spyware.

So a few things to do :

Following by posted by mflynn :

    "Cleanup

This is for 95 98 ME only!

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

When finished hit CTRL ALT DEL to reboot the computer. "

    Then download
    Spybot and AdAware

Update their reference files and then run Spybot first followed by AdAware.
