    Installed BT Brodband (512K) on a Windows XP installation with the result that the Internet browsing became slower than a 56K modem. Using a Windows ME hard drive on the same machine and with the same Broadband package installed and the performance increased to the level expected. Have checked everything I could think of on the XP installation , am completely baffled. A 56K modem installed in XP gives a much faster connection ! any ideas gratefully received.

    A little testing is in order here. Easy stuff first.

    So a bit of work with the ping command.

    First, do a baseline run with ME to see what results you get.

    ME
    start~run~command to open a "DOS" window
    ping -t 127.0.0.1 > c:\ME-ping-test.txt to send the results to a text file so you can easily examine the results later and let it run for 10-20 reps.
    ping www.windowsbbs.com >> c:\ME-ping-test.txt and note the >> which will append the results to the file rather than over-writing..
    ping 64.246.42.33 >> c:\ME-ping-test.txt pinging the IP of this forum. The results should be very similar in terms of response time and all the other values to when you pinged by name.

    XP
    start~run~cmd and then ping -t 127.0.0.1 but let this one run for at least 100 reps. You are looking for any results with higher values or any time-outs. Either will indicate a problem with the network card install under XP.

    Then do the same as you did with ME but use a different text file name. At this point, looking for a problem with name resolution and if there is one, the ping by name will take lots longer. If you spot anything odd, post back with specifics or post a copy of the ping results from the file.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If nothing odd with the initial ping testing, then from XP
    start~run~cmd followed by ipconfig /all > c:\XP-config.txt. Print that out and then from ME, start~run~winipcfg and click the button for details. It is a nice GUI display but harder to transfer anywhere so easiest to compare with the XP settings by looking at the ME screen and the XP paper. The settings should be identical for the two. Please post any that are different and please don't do any of the xxx.xxx.123.21 sort of masking of any values when you post.
