A few weeks ago my computer seemed to slow down, especially after having logged in. This is evidenced by the time it now takes for the desktop icon images to fill in (10 seconds... previously 1 second or less). I did notice that the HDD light stays on for a while after logging in (indicating the resources are being used). I checked Task Manager and nothing seems to be happening during that time. The file count does jump from 42, 43 or 44 during that time but nothing seems to take but 1 or 2% CPU at most except for System Idle Processes which varies from 82 to 98?

So far I have ran CCleaner, Spybot S&D, AVG Scan (and Kapersky Online as a double check), HijackThis 2.02, JavaRa, ATF, JV16 Registry Cleaner, MS Disc Cleanup and I have also tried temporarily removing AVG and NVidia Service Consule from the start up to see if they are the culprits. Negative on all counts. I did use the MS Defrag and that did help a little but not enough. Per a previous thread, I checked Pagefile and MFT for fragmentation and each have 2 (which I assumed was not significant).

Sometimes, the filling of browser pages can be balky, too. I have DSL. I noticed that my work computer has gotten balky, too. Could the SP3 update have something to do with this?? Not sure what else to do.

    Thanks, Larry

    Hi Larry

It may be AVG8, and disabling some of it will not sufice.

Early AVG8 was really bad, it ran ok on some computers and bad on others, remove it and rerun the CCleaner cleanups and test before reinstalling a new Virus cleaner!

Hi Mike, I was afraid of that (AVG8). I can do that. Is there an alternative AV that you would suggest (pref. freeware)?

To add fuel to the fire about AVG8, it pulled my system down to an intolerably slow level, especially during boot. I made sure it wasn't initiating a scan at boot so that wasn't the problem. It was just an alpha dog that was taking over the system.

I dropped it and am running barefoot for the moment. I do an on-line scan on occasionally but never get any hits. If you are careful (alert and knowledgeable), you can go without an AV program and save more time than they are worth. That's just for me though, so you'll have to gauge your own level of risk management and tolerance.

Thanks for your thoughts on AVG8. I have already removed and I am going to try Avira. Then Avast, if necessary.

My response to the above quote is... "I have a teenager "!

Oh, the desktop icons took 1 second to fill (instead of 15) once AVG8 was removed.

OK Great Larry I thought that might do it!

If you can do a Windows search for
    Grisoft
    AVG7
    AVG8
and delete all found from your HD

Same in Registry if you know how!

Do you folks have any experience with Avira?? Works great except that everything that it finds causes the scanning process to stop and wait for a user response. I couldn't find a related config option. Any thoughts on this?
