I made a CD using an original WIN XP Pro CD to which I slipstreamed SP2. For slipstreaming I used a SP2 CD that MS sent me in the mail. This CD was used to load a new hard drive and it worked perfectly. I would like to update that CD so it contains SP3. How do I do it? What do I start with?
Do I start with the original WIN XP Pro CD, download the humongous SP3 image and put that on a CD? Anyone with detailed information? Thanks.

I am preparing to slipstream SP3 and I will use the original XP RTM CD (no SP) as the base and Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers which I already have downloaded. (If you choose the ISO image, you will create a CD just to extract it to the harddisk.)

If I recall correctly, I followed the instructions in Slipstreaming Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) when slipstreaming SP2 and I would think that the procedure is the same with SP3.

An alternativ tutorial is Arie's Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD which I assume also works with SP3. It differs from Thurrott's tutorial in that the SP file does not get extracted by you but automatically.

Thanks Christer. I seem to have a program on my computer that I used for SP2 called SlipStreamer which I used last time and it is fairly automatic without much thinking. Are you familiar with it?

I've heard about a few "autostreamers" (nLite comes to mind) but never tried them (too far between Service Packs ... ;) ... ) but If you have a link I would be interested in taking a look!

If you download the ISO image, use Winrar (if you don't have it you can get it at oldversion.com) to extract the image to a folder. Within the folder you will find the SP3 self-extracting cabinet file. That is the file that actually installs SP3 and would be used for slipstreaming.

I'm thinking I may try a slipstream tonight, if I get time.

    Hi Christer

Nlite is more complex than just an autostreamer but it will do the job.

    Autostreamer http://mhtools.knoware.nl/raptor/autostreamer/AutoStreamer.exe
It is 1 2 3 you are done! What it does it does good.

Asks for source 1. (your windows XP CD), location of Service Pack 2. and were to save the iso file 3..

    Hi Mike!

I've never used nLite but as I understand it, not only Service Packs can be integrated but Updates and Drivers too.

Thanks for the hint on Autostreamer. I started to download it but when I was choosing the target I noticed that I already have it.

    Hi Ackerberg

I edited that to clarify it, the 2 is for like step 2 of 1. 2. 3.

It will slipsream SP3 correctly into whatever level CD you have from the original with no service pack or SP1 or SP2.

    ackerberg,
    thanks for the link!

It says nothing about extracting "Microsoft Corporation.img" to make the CD bootable. Does "Microsoft Corporation.img" get added automatically?

    Mike,
According to Arie, look back up the thread, slipstreaming SP3 onto a version which has SP2 will kill windows update.
    Who is one to believe?
Here is my question! I will start with WIN XP Pro, the original disc, no SP1 or SP2. Will slipstreaming that with SP3 include SP1 and SP2?
Please provide a yes or no answer, like you are on the witness stand :)

    Christer--
When I slipstreamed SP2 using that program, the resulting CD would boot. I used it to install WIN XP Pro with SP2 on a new HD.

AutoStreamer worked well. I like simple, I just made an XP Pro SP3 iso image. So is there a problem. I used an XP Pro CD with SP2?

Nope Ranger SVO you are ready to go!

No sp, sp1 or sp2. All are ok!

BTW another simple program that does what it does so well!

    Hi Christer,
I used an autostreamer called... Autostreamer in an earlier SP3 thread. Works fine, and very simple to use. Doesn't stream Vista SP1 or O2K7 SP1 unfortunately.

Thanks to all who commented on "autostreamer" ... :) ... !

As I understand Arie's comment on "the killing of Windows Update ", it doesn't matter which the base is, RTM, SP1, SP1a or SP2. Installing SP3 will break Windows Update. I will wait until Arie has posted the new guide!

That is what I said! When you get SP3 you have SP3! Which is an accumulation and update of SP1 and SP2.

I have updated to SP3 on 7 stations and none have effected Win Update! It did reinstall IE7 when I ran winupdate after I installed it on one machine!

There are plenty others on the BBS that have updated to SP3 and none have mentioned issues with winupdate!

    Hi Mike
I second that, but I think you missed Arie's point ....
All my installs of SP3 RC1,2 & RTM were made from downloaded files.
