Sorry for yet another slipstreaming question, but after making 4 coasters I'm giving up until I can fix this latest error.

First off I didnt copy all the required files from the original CD (I got a bizarre dual Home/Pro combo disk from college) I fixed that but then got the .sif file error with the second attempt. I fixed that but I then burnt on a badly pressed CD before I noticed  and now when I thought things were ok, I get a "Please insert Windows Service Pack 1 CD Into drive A: ".

I followed all the instructions as far as I know, the only thing different is that I replaced the txtsetup.sif in the main install folder with the one from the updated I386 folder. It burnt and booted fine, but I get this error.

One thing I did notice was when I ran the update.bat it gave a single "the system cannot find the file" error right at the end, but seemed to do everything else.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I did a slipstreamed xp pro cd for myself, and it works fine. I followed the instruction located here. My CD came out fine. (i used it to install XP on a laptop for a friend.)

Ummm...isn't that illegal? Putting your XP on someone else's computer? Doesn't that deactivate your WPA?

Not as long as the friend has his own copy and code, using the slip streamed CD for convenience ...... ...... I think.

If your friend uses the disk to just reinstall (repair) windows I don't know what the result will be, but I suspect if they ever wipe the drive and do a clean install it could spell trouble for both him (her) and you. I would guess that if they were to run SFC and use the disk it would be no problem. Only a guess though.

It is not illegal if he uses his cd-key. I called MS on this, and they said as long as he uses HIS cd key, it is okay. However, if I were to install it on his system using MY cd key, it would be illegal.

Some of my friends that have XP keep wondering why I paid for a license, when I can find the software and keys on the net. Simple I tell them, my copy is legal, is yours??

From what I understand also, it is legal for me to copy a CD and send it out (like if someone here had a bad disc), but I cant include keys with it. However, if you have a orginal CD from MS, you can send it back for a replacement (think it costs like $10 or something).

I don't think the OS is gonna work for either computer when they each "phone home" for updates, and I would disable any auto updating immediately, until the friend can get his own XP cd and get yours off of his laptop. I don't think you did him a favor, I think you shot yourself in the foot.

I wouldn't do an sfc online, either!

    EDIT
I was typing while you explained he had his own key. That makes sense. It's not the XP cd that is different, it is the registration. Sorry, I type slowly...

Thats the guide I followed. I have a feeling it may be due to my strange XP CD, and I've been trying to split the Pro files out so I can put it back on CD afterwards, let me explain a bit more:

The CD is from uni, it contains separate directories for both Pro and Home (screen grab of dir structure), when I copy the contents of the disc onto HDD its over 1 gig in size due to all the duplicate files. Seeing as I never use Home I tried to take all the files and dirs relating to Pro off and ignore the Home ones so I could get it back onto CDR, which seemed to work until I start getting these errors. Maybe I'm missing something from the original CD, I'm not 100% sure which files I need and which can be left when I copy them to HDD, or perhaps the guide doesnt take into account these types of XP discs? Does anyone know exactly which files I would need from the original disc?

If I cant fix it easily I'm just going to stick the service pack and rollup on a separate CD, it might not be slipstreamed but it'll be faster than using the web update, which is what I've been using in the past.

I doubt any guide is going to work for you, the image is similar to the MSDN CD for XP, which also includes both Home & Pro. The guides you'll find on the Internet (including mine) are all for the "retail" version of Windows XP (AFAIK).
