I have used Slingshot in the past for internet access while I have traveled out of my local provider's area and it has worked very well. I tried to use it a few days ago without success (I have plenty of minutes on my account). Several efforts over the past few days to log into the company website failed. I get the "The Page Cannot be Displayed" message. Google search didn't help any.

Anyone have any information on whether they went under and, if so, does anyone know of another similar service? Thanks.

virginia--I cannot access www.slingshot.com either. It could be their servers are down, but if the problem lasts much longer, you can probably assume they are out of business. Do you have a phone number for them?
As far as alternatives are concerned, I never have thought about "prepaid" Internet time. However, Juno's web page still says they offer free email and Internet service (now called NetZero), and Juno/Net Zero has access numbers all over the US. The downsides are
    1) A somewhat annoying banner ad
    2) if you use the web more than a few hours a month they will cut you off. (I do not think they limit use for email.)
So maybe not a bad idea for occasional use away from home.
You get it at www.Juno.com .
Another supposedly free ISP is http://www.dotnow.com/ I know nothing about them.
If you only need email when away from home, your present email service may be accessible from remote PC's. Ask your provider how to do it.
And finally here are two web sites to help you locate ISP's all over the US. Maybe some are no more expensive than Slingshot, even if you have to sign up for a full month.

Welshjim - I think I got my answer. I found some unhappy posts on a site called "Harris' Hangar ". Apparently Slingshot pulled the plug on August 21st - without notice. Glad I didn't have over $20 invested - I had used half of my available minutes so it wasn't a total loss.

Brett and Jim - Thanks for the responses. Brett, I checked out the BAMnet site that you posted and I have already signed up for and used the service. I like it. No programs to download and only one (800) phone number to worry about. Establish one new dialup networking connection for BAMnet and you're good to go. Should make travel computing much easier.

Cost per minute is a bit more than some of the others but the ease of set up and use more than offsets the higher per minute cost in my estimation.

By the way, I do enjoy watching you and some of the others on this board chase each other around in responding to some of the questions that are posted.
