 I write a small newsletter to friends and relatives. My typing skills consist of the peck and hunt system.
Quite often, in fact too often I must hit the sleep key with out my knowledge. Of course I abruptly get the message that Windows is going to sleep. I frantically hit wake, too late. I have streaming audio on all day. When this happens it will go black, but the audio continues. Nothing seems to awaken it except a reboot .Is
there any was to disable the sleep function. It is a nuisance I don't need.

You didn't say what OS you use...but this should work...go to start>settings>control panel. Look for Power options or Power management and double click that. In the power schemes tab set the choices to either "always on" or "never" depending on what is offered. Click apply and ok. Close the control panel and test the computer, if it still goes into sleep mode go to start>help and search for sleep mode. Follow the instructions given for shutting it down. Good luck!

I disabled my Windows 98 power management via the BIOS. Reboot then press the F2 key. When the BIOS Setup Utility screen appears highlight Power, then set Power Management to Disabled, then press the F10 key to save and exit.

I am using Windows 98 2nd addition. I went to start>settings>control panel. Looked for Power options or Power management. Those things were already done. I looked previously in help to no avail before I wrote. So far no good. I also tried to start by Rebooting then pressing the F2 key. The BIOS Setup Utility screen never did appear . I tried several times rebooting with nothing happening. I probably am not doing something right.

If working with help and power man/options doesn't help {there is no "hibernate tab" in power options} it's probably set in the bios.

How you get into the bios will depend on the computer/motherboard. Not all are reached by pressing F2 while booting. In some you would have to press esc or some other key or set of keys. Check your computer manual or call the maker of the computer to find out what key/keys to use for this. Or post the make here and someone will know what key you should use.

Try the delete key at startup to get into the bios setup. Does the computer go into sleep mode when you leave it alone for a while. If not, most likely the power management is already disabled in the bios. If this is the case I would look for some sort of keyboard software that's loading when windows starts. If there is some, disable it. I'm not familiar with any software like that because I don't have one of the keyboards with all the extra bells and whistles but I was kind of thinking that if power management is disabled perhaps the software still has the ablility to give the proper command to put it to sleep.

The problem is soley of my own making. Some how as I type I must accidentally hit the sleep button. It is just fine if I keep off the sleep key. I could use the keyboard of the other computer. It does not have a sleep or wake button. I haven't tried the other suggestion yet. Thanks a lot for all of the good help.

If the keyboard has a sleep button then disabling the keyboard software will disable the button. If there is any loaded there may be an icon for it in the system tray. If so, try right clicking on it and see if there is a disable option. If so, you can disable it while you're working and enable it again after you're done. If you do disable it and there are any other special keys such as an internet key those keys also will be disabled.

Those keyboard with the sleep key does not need any driver, the only way to get rid of this problem is to remove the key-top of the sleep button, it might lessen the chance on press them. :D

Well, I think I have solved it. Today I went out and bought a new Microsoft keyboard. It puts that infernal sleep key way over to the left top of the keyboard. I really like this new keyboard. I used some of Santa's money for it. Now, perhaps Dummy can work in peace. Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.:D
