Sleep is available on the Shutdown list, but hibernate is not. Is there a Win 7 setting to correct this or is it most likely a problem with a setting in the BIOS?

Desktop or Laptop since you provide no system specs?

Mr. Bill, I have a Desktop with a Gigabyte w a P55A-UD40 motherboard. I went through the procedure listed in the link provided by the staff and now hibernate is listed on the Shutdown list. I haven't test things yet to see if I've introduced any other problems. Thanks.

I tried the hibernate and when I restarted, I got a message from the boot loader that it could not recover from the hibernate. I don't remember the exact wording, but I had to reboot from scratch.

Exact error messages are essential to help pinpoint the cause of the issue :)

Subsequent tests have caused BSODs, hangs, etc. I never saw the same error message I saw the first time. I'm about to give up. I'll try later today after the new MS update. It included an update to the video driver.

Did you do the Video driver update? Best not to mess with drivers if you aren't having a problem with that piece of hardware. If you are, you should go to the manufacture of the piece of hardware and get the driver.

I did update the driver. I did a test and it worked for the first time.
