    Using XP Pro.

Added a new HDD as a slave.

When I go to disk management ONLY master (C) is showing. Down lower in the same window it (C) is described as Disk 0 - 29GB NFTS - healthy system.

My slave HDD is not showing on the top but on the bottom it says Disk 1 8GB unallocated.

When I go to disk defragmenter I ONLY see C (Disk 0) drive (and not second HDD - slave (Disk 1). Please, what do so both HDDs show so I can defragment it and start using for my backups? Thanks

I guess that the reason for it not being seen in Windows Explorer and Disk Defragmenter is that it has no partitions at all and a drive letter has not been allocated. A harddrive must have at least one partition.

In DiskManagement, right-click on Disk1 and choose > create partition.

Follow the prompts and choose > create an extended partition. When asked if all available space shlould be used, the answer is YES.

Next, You will be prompted to create a logical partition. When asked if all available space should be used, the answer is YES.

Now, a drive letter will be suggested. This will be in sequence after already installed drives, including opticals. If You have C: and a CD-ROM which is D: then the added harddrive will become E:.
If You want the added drive to become D:, then You need to assign another drive letter to the CD-ROM. This must be done BEFORE partitioning the new harddrive with a reboot inbetween. The warning about possible concequences should be concidered. Problems may occur with programs using the CD-ROM, e.g. map programs where the program itself is installed to the harddrive but not the different maps which are on CD's. (My CD-R/RW is X: and my DVD-ROM is Y:.)

    Edited:

I forgot that after assigning a drive letter, You will be prompted to format the single partition. Choose NTFS and FULL FORMAT.

Right-click anywhere on the desktop > properties > desktop > customize > general

Check the appropriate boxes to display the icons on the desktop.
