We're about to setup our first server as an application server for one application to be used for 7 XP machines. We are planning to use Windows 2000 Server. Can someone recommend the simplest setup of W2K Server or point us to a book or site that we can use to avoid getting in over our heads?

For the server setup part, just insert the 2K CD and follow the bouncing ball.

You'll get to a screen with options for optional pieces. Only install the ones you know you'll need. Easy enough to add the others in later if necessary.

IIS especially can make for some vulnerablities so only install it if you know you will need it.

The tricky part is likely to be the application. Say which one and you will get advice about it. Be sure to specify if your network is domain or peer. And if domain, classic NT or Active Directory.

Thanks for the response. The application will be UltraTax. Thus far, it is a peer-to-peer network with 5 XP workstations with one of the workstations acting as the server. UltraTax has become very slow over the last two tax seasons, so we decided to get a more robust Dell server to hopefully speed up the UltraTax application. Our workstations are fast, and have lots of RAM(1.5GB).

Does your version run with the database portion on a server and the application front end loaded on each work station?

UltraTax loads completely from the server after running a client like applet at the workstation from the server that sets up an icon on the workstation. There are several lengthy updates during the tax season, so we wanted to just run them on the peer-to-peer server once per update.

Excellent idea and you shouldn't have any problems with the default 2K server setup (less the stuff you don't need).
