I am a retired antiques dealer and I only got a computer 5 years ago in order to keep in touch with friends and relatives who live all over the world. I was very nervous at first as I was convinced that all the computers in my home town would crash if I made a mistake, so I went to evening classes for "silver surfers" called Computing for the Terrified !! I enjoyed it so much I bought a computer (Windows 98) and then as I got more confident I updated to XP. When Vista came out I was reluctant at first to get it but although I found it difficult at first, I spent 3 weeks trying to master it and now I love it and wouldn't go back to XP for anything. The only trouble I have now is not enough to do on the computer!! I have to resist the urge to fiddle about with it because the workings really fascinate me. It's great to keep learning and that's why I enjoy this Forum which I read all the time even if I don't have a problem. Many thanks to all you very knowledgeable and helpful " techy friends" out there!!

Yorkshire, Appears your enjoying your computer way too much. -- In regard to your comment I will suggest you consider learning the HTML coding and taking a shot at building your own web site i.e. web pages.

I too am retired and find creating web pages from nothing is interesting, stimulating and fun some what akin to the enjoyment an artist obtains I reckon.

I have created several web sites for my children and grand children and it has provided me many a relaxing hour.

Most of the web sites can be seen by going to: http://www.raysmyth.net

    Cheers, Ray Smyth

Thanks for all that info Old Chief! I went to see a friend of mine today and told her about your post! She has asked me to help her set up a web site for her; she teaches Classical Guitar about which I know zilch so we shall both be learning. Thanks for the suggestion. What a great Forum this is!:D

Well Great! - If you need some help just holler. I have been helping others with their web pages and have put together some stuff I can send you if you like.

Once you get into this, you will find there are automatic web page makers such as Microsoft's "Front Page" and another is called "Dream Weaver" -- However, I like doing the actual coding and use nothing but, a text editor similar to Microsoft's NotePad which you should already have on your computer.

The automatic jobs are fine except they have to guess at what your trying to accomplish and put in 10 times the amount of coding actually required to do a simple web page.

I have posted a couple of things on my web site which you might find interesting and they are at:... http://www.raysmyth.net/dunce/00-dunce.html

I also have a page at:... http://www.raysmyth.net/htmlhelp/0-test-p.html which provides a little info on HTML

There are also any number of web sites that explain the HTML coding.

Good Luck and as I said if you like I can provide you a couple of e-mails I sent some friends just last week about getting started with doing web pages.

    Ray,

Thank you SO much for going to so much trouble! I have spoken to my friend again and she says that she will be able to start doing this in September so I will read up about setting up web sites over the summer!
