    Netscape 7.1 Streamline

    Streamline Features:
    -one single file, no extra downloads needed.

    -small filesize, only 49% of full package. Reduces the downloading time and trouble.
    -(Full package from Netscape is 29.2MB)

    -extra help resource listed in Help menu. (more info)

    -ability to install Navigator only or Navigator with Mail only without AIM.

    NOTE: Windows 98 (all Win9x) users please use Netscape 7.02 instead, there's system resource drainage issue with Windows 98 in NS7.1.
    ---

    The Resource Leak affects ALL OS', altho Windows 9x users more adversely. I have updated my
    Netscape 7.1 Resource Leak page today, to share new information on the memCache setting.

    Briefly, I changed the memCache setting in "about:config" to reflect a value of 1024 KB, rather than the 2048 KB setting which I had previously used.

    The new setting allows me to use my Tab Group of 14 tabs, with no serious resource leak. To check the results of the 1024 KB setting, I utilized the System Resource Meter, and realized that when available resources were at a low 30% value, resources were released, and returned to 68-70% availability, which is normal for my Windows 98SE system, 384 MB RAM. This behavior was consistent throughout the day. I've had this setting for a week now, and the results are consistent.

    FWIW,

    Ramona :D

    Mozilla 1.4

    Ramona, where do you go to make this change to 1024 in Mozilla 1.4?

    Thanks,

    Marvin

    From Ramona's page:

    How To Modify Hidden Preferences Using about:config
    http://www.mozillazine.org/misc/about:config/

    This page gives detailed screen shots on how to use the about:config to add or edit new Preferences. As described in Bug Report #204374, this is the additional Preference you should add to about:config:

    To add the memCache Preference:

    * browse to about:config
    * scroll down and look for browser.cache.memory.capacity
    (It shouldn't be there, but if it IS, right click, pick modify and change to 4096. skip next step.)
    * right click, pick NEW, pick INTEGER, type in:
    browser.cache.memory.capacity - click OK
    * type in 4096 - click OK
    * restart Netscape (or Mozilla)

    instead of 4096 you can use 1024.

    Note: if the link for about:config doesn't work, and you get a 404 error: the link in the location bar will look so:
    http://www.mozillazine.org/misc/about%20:config/

    Remove the %20 hit enter and you will be taken to the page. There is something about the BBS Software that adds a space when about:config, about:cache, etc., is typed.

    Hi Ramona, Thanks for the info, it worked just fine for me as I typed it without a space.
