The new PC (Win XP Home) came with a Conexant dialup modem. I have enabled sound (or modem volume) in both the dial-up ISP's Preferences and in Control Panel|Phone and Modem Options. But no sound when dialing. Modem works fine.
Not the end of the earth, but would like to hear the screeches from time to time. :)
    Any ideas?

Haven't tried it in XP and I'm thinking of Win98, but try in Device Manager...the properties for your modem.

mattman--Thanks, but Device Manager just leads to the same window as Control Panel and I have "Speaker Volume" set at Medium. (High makes no difference.)

Not all modems give a dialling sound - AFAIK the volume control affects only the voice part of the modem, if used.

PeteC--Interesting. Just as long as it works, I guess I should be happy.
    Thanks.

Is this a voice modem? If so, you should be able to connect a cable from the modem to the line in on your sound card. If you do this, you should hear the modem sounds coming from your speakers. If this is a voice modem and you have the cable connected, check to see if you have the line in muted.
