In MS Word 2000, is there an EASY way to turn off ALL corrections such as spell check and especially autoformat-as-you-type?

Sometimes these things are useful and sometimes they REALLY can get in the way - and be very annoying. I can shut this stuff off piece by piece in many menus but I'm not sure I got it ALL not to mention having to restore everything to my prefs.

Is the either a single-menu or a single-button "OFF" swtich for these obtrusive features? LOL

I don't know what you have tried but look at:

Tools>Options>Spelling & Grammar and uncheck "Check spelling as you type" and "Check grammar as you type ".

    For Auto Format:

Tools>AutoCorrect and under each tab, uncheck what you don't want. If you don't want Word to check anything, uncheck everything. You should only have to do this once for the acitve document.

For a more permanent change to all new documents you create you will have to change the "normal.dot" template, search for "normal.dot" and make a note of which directory it is in.

In Word go to File>Open, select in the Files of type drop down box "Document Templates (*.dot) then navigate to the directory the normal.dot file is in and open the normal.dot template. Then repeat the above to turn off Auto formating and spelling/grammar. Save the normal.dot file back into the same directory. Make sure the extension when you save it is ".dot "

Hopefully that will help you out.:)

    Thanks.

I appreciate the info but what I'm trying to do, is do it without having to change all kinds of settings in the options.

Every so often I find myself wanting to make sure Word doesn't muck with my typing (for instance I wanted to edit some Morse Code, and the -'s and .'s were causing havoc with the autoformat).

Seems like there should be a "don't autoformat" button or menu selection so you can ensure your text remains verbaitim as long as it's on.

I would up having to do it in Wordpad.

Not sure if it would work, but I'd try making a normal.dot for each situation and named accordingly (like one.dot, two.dot) so it can be called up as needed.

I don't see any way of doing what you want with just a toobar button. A look through the toobar customize doesn's seem to have any commands etc. available to just turn off all autoformating, etc. in one go.

Perhaps Sparrow's method of creating custom templates will work.
