    Dell Inspiron 5100 Notebook, new.

Start > Turn off computer > Restart does not restart, but shuts down the unit and must power pack up via the power button.

Power management is handled by XP Home, Hibernation disabled, all auto standby features disabled.

If I try to reboot the computer, it shuts down....I want it to shut down when I select 'Shut down'....which it does and I want it to restart when I select 'Restart'....which it does not - it shuts down.

Any ideas how to restart through the OS as one normally would?

According to this site the restart-instead-of-shut-down problem is caused by one of two things:

    1. You have "automatically restart" selected. To disable that, go to Control Panel>System>Advanced Tab>Start Up and Recovery>Settings>System Failure>Uncheck "Automatically Restart." Click OK and OK to close out.

    OR

    2. Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 or Direct CD 5.0 program is installed on your computer. To resolve this issue, go to the Roxio Web site to download and install the updated driver for Easy CD Creator 5.0 for Windows XP. To work around this issue, uninstall Roxio Easy CD Creator or Direct CD.

    Hi, Miz ~

    Same Miz from Woody's?

Miz, thank you very much for you reply, but I think you may have gotten it backward. This is not a restart-instead-of-shut-down problem, but rather a shut-down-instead-of-restart. :)
