    Hi!

    My computer that I am running 98SE on has decided that when it shuts down it will make itself heard. The screen flickers with lines going across it and there is a rapid beeping sound. This continues for 15 or so seconds and then it shuts down. I have turned off the 'Windows Excit' sound but that has not helped.

    Any ideas?

    Have you look into this as being something your graphics board is capable of doing when acting up? I seem to recall running across a few posts at various sites that tracked this down to the graphics board. You may want to use your search engine of choice, such as google.com>groups tab, and search for glitches with your board. Either that or go to your adapter support site and huntNpeck through their knowledge base. I understand boards/driver_versions by Nvidia are well known for this.

    ===Your post is lacking any specifics that may help to better pinpoint this, so general suggestions are all that can be given.==

    Provided this is not a ram or bios related problem, which I strongly doubt since it happens at shutdown and not at startup

    Shutdown 15 Step Program:
    http://www.tomax7.com/aplus/APlusCD/WINDOWS SHUTDOWN TROUBLESHOOTING.doc

    You may have to treat this as a general Win98 shutdown problem and use the cleanboot shutdown tshoot method to track it down.

    =====Other thoughts===
    If using the taskmanager to get an idea of what is running at shutdown or to use the endtask function to mamually shutdown/endtask on each (exceptions systray and explorer.exe), remember; the list does not reflect all the programs, hooks or services that may still be running. You may wish to use something a little more complete such as

    Taskinfo:
    http://www.iarsn.com/

    Startup Cop:
    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,2862,00.asp

    Enditall:
    http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/

    NOTE*A more accurate list may be checked out through "msinfo32 ">software environment>running tasks but even this may not be complete.

    =======
    Add aware software removals........
    such as lavasofts ad-aware or spybot. Haven't got the links handy but the archives have plenty of references and advice on the enables/disables to-dos. You should probably read a few of the past posts on this subject anyway.

    Speaking of archives, there are at least two posts which are unresolved involving a flashing fatalexit code:0x0200 and a continuous beeping at shutdown.

    If you should pin this down, please remember to update the post and share the fix.

    Thnx for the info Goddez!

    You gave me alot of avenues to check out.

    Before I started though I thought I would make sure the problem wasn't with the desktop theme I was using. I went into properties on my desktop and changed my desktop theme and Bingo! The computer shuts down with no problem now. Obviously one of the files is corrupted.......

    I have filed away the info you gave me for future reference as one never knows when it will come in handy:).

    Have a great evening

    A desktop theme!!!

    Go figure. I guess I have those two unresolved past posts still kicking around in the back of my head. Chaulk this up to overkill. I was expecting/anticipating something more complicated than a corrupted theme at shutdown. (which, by the way is one of the very first steps suggested in that 15 step shutdown checklist).

    Thanks so much for updating your post and sharing your fix and even though you didn't need this nfo, your welcome. :D
