    Windows XP Home SP2
    Intel D845WN mother board

Restart is ok. Shutdown stops with the message "windows is shutting down" on the screen. I can hear HD shutdown. (To confirm this, I turn the switch off, and turn it on again without any error message.)

I guessed someelse should have experienced this issue before. So, I searched this forum by the keyword of "shutdown" and got a lot of help.

However, I only went ahead one step by reinstalled it. The video can also be shutdown. The powersupply and CPU fan still keep running.

Can anyone help me out? thanks in advance!

    Hello Jason,

Can you clarify: what did you re install? The OS, and if yes, a clean re install or a repair?

http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm is a XP shutdown trouble shooter, have you been through that?

In anticipation of furher questions about your system specs, download and install System Information for Windows http://www3.sympatico.ca/gtopala/about_siw.html Its an execute and run application.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

    1. I did two kind of repair reinstall. A). used the Windows XP Home CD to boot up and ignore the first "Repair" because it would lead me to the Console Center. And after pressed "F8" and selected "Repair ". B). Booted up the windows XP and logined in then put the Windows XP CD in. selected "upgrade install "

    2. I have tried " http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm is a XP shutdown trouble shooter ". But it did not work.

    3. I will try http://www3.sympatico.ca/gtopala/about_siw.html and let you know the result.

    Thanks.

    Hi jason,

SIW is a info application, it doesn't fix anything.

Asked you to download it because somebody will ask info about your system - especially hardware specs.

    Regards - Charles

Sorry, I suppose you will ask me some information.

SIW is really great! it unveals a lot of "hidden" information.

I have also used another HD to install a "brand new" windows.

It worked fine. So hardware should not be a problem.

    Hi Jason,

If you think its not hardware, to test that, can you shutdown without problems from safe mode, where only the OS and basic drivers are running?

If that goes ok, have you tried disabling running programs one by one shutting down between each disable?

Have you looked in the event logs? Right click My Computer > Manage > Expand Event Viewer and look at the logs for the System and Applications.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

As per your recommendation, I entered the safe mode. Even worse, the video could not be shutdown. I only heard the HD was shutdown.

Now, I am delving the Log files and let you know soon...

    ....

There is no strange things in the Log files.

    Hi Jason,

I would still go thru and disable each running process - shut down, and then the next, and so forth. If nothing eles, you can rule it out.

It could also be a driver, it may be worth the effort to update drivers.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

I am really sorry about that my boss let me give it up. He does not want me waste two much time on it although I believe it is worth.

The computer is gone. I lost a good chance to learn something that is really useful.
