My windows 98 Dell Laptop, inspiration 5000, goes thru the shutdown sequence then hangs on the shutdown screen. I must manually turn the computer off from this screen. Suggestions Welcome.

louies, I also used to have this problem and it was driving me nuts.
Someone suggested to me to try third party software and I have been using "Quick Shutdown" now for well over 12 month and hardly ever have any problems now.
I guess not the politcally correct way but for me it works.
    good luck

    louies, hawk22,
Here's a quickie, that also works.

Shut down Windows with one click.

Create a shortcut to the Shut Down command by following these simple steps. First, click on an empty area of your Desktop and choose "New," then "Shortcut." In the Command Line, enter the following exactly:

    C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE USER.EXE,EXITWINDOWS

and click the Next button. Give the shortcut a name (mine is ShutDownWin) and click Finish. After a moment, a new icon will appear on the Desktop sporting the Windows logo. Click it to shut down Windows whenever you like.

    Hope this helps :)

Thanks for your suggestions and help in resolving this problem.
I found that there was a problem driver with my CD drive connected to the USP. I can now shutdown properly afer reloading the iOmega Zip CD driver. I found the problem afer reading some of the comments on the MS site suggesting that a driver could be causing the problem. Sure enough I disconnected my USP cables and the computer consistently shut down normally. Then I started connecting the external devices back on line until I found the problem device.
