On my laptop upon shutting down it says windows is shutting down, but it just stalls and keeps running until I remove the battery and re insert it. Any suggestions? Windows Vista Home Premium.

Hi I could be wrong but every time thats happened to a friend or families computer it's been a virus or serious malware problem!

I notice your system details are not present, might be useful to go to 'user cp' top left and do so to help the guys figure your problem out.

    Hope you get sorted soon!

    Regards, Ian.

Hi Marv6. The first thing I would try would be to perform a clean boot in Windows Vista to determine if a program is interfering with the shutdown process. Follow the instructions here, How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista or Windows 7.

If performing a clean boot does not fix the problem then its possible that the system is set to clear the page file at shut down which could cause the shutdown process to stall.

Follow these steps to make sure that the clear page file at shutdown setting is disabled:

    1. Click Start< Run
    2. Type regedit and hit enter
    3. When the Registry Editor opens navigate to, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
    4. Locate the ClearPageFileAtShutdown key
    5. Right click the key and select Modify
    6. Change the value from 1 to 0 if it is not already set to the value of 0
    7. Close the Registry Editor and reboot the computer

Evan, followed your steps, but, the value was already set to 0. As far as viruses and malware I use Norton 360 and malwarebytes on a regular basis. Thanks for the suggestions. If there are more please let me know!

Was there any change in the shutdown sequence when you performed a clean boot?

Do you have Windows Vista Service Pack 2 installed?

Evan, Have Service Pack 2, no change in seaquence, my startup items are at miniumum. Since I re-set value to zero, shutdown has not locked up, yet!

    Thanks,

    Marvin

You can also perform the tweaks in this link to help make the shutdown process faster, Make Windows Shut Down Faster.

I know that the article applies to Windows XP but the same registry values are present in Vista and Windows 7 and they work the same way.

Evan , many thanks for your input, I especially liked the link above and will save it. It has only failed to shutdown once since December. I pull he battery and then put it back in and it seems to work fine most of the time.
