    Hello

I run XP Pro SP3, and it has developed a small problem (or two). As of a month or so ago, whenever I shut down the machine, it told me it was going to perform the updates and then shut down, which it does OK. The issue is, it does it every time, even if I shut down several times a day, implying that it is the same update every time, and that they have not 'taken'. When this first started, I tried restoring to a previous (to this problem) time, and Windows told me that it was unable to restore (not sure of the reason); this happened on all the restore points that I chose.

I have tried going to the MS update page, and checked that I have the current updates, which I have.

I don't know if these are connected, and, at the moment, they are more of an irritant than a problem, but they could get worse.

I have no recollection of having installed any new software around this time, and installed SP3 some time before this 'event'.

    Thanks in advance.

    John

Look at post #9 here - a copy of a message from MS which may be of help.

    Thanks guys

I will study both of these suggestions to see if they apply, and come back to you with the results, if any.

Is there any way to find out what update it is installing every time ?
I assume that there is a log of updates performed but can't remember where to find it, always assuming that I can see it. Should I be able to ?

I discovered (well, remembered, really) that a couple of times Windows tried to do an update, but it failed. This was for Windows Genuine Advantage Notification KB905474. The last time that this happened, I decided to download and install the update manually; as a result of this, the shut down problem has gone away. Should have thought about this before.

    Ah well.

    Thanks all

    John
