When shutting down normally from time to time, my friend's machine seems to get stuck and the shut down tune skips like on a broken record. He has to force the shut down by holding the power button in. Anyone have any insight as to what might be wrong here?

In event viewer under system tools there are two errors over the last few days:
    and
In the Would one suspect hardware or software?

Any help most welcome - Thanks

The command shutdown -s -f caused it to shut down normally.

A new occurrence, now and then (no pattern) the machine seems to freeze for 5 or 6 seconds and then resume normal operation and then freeze and resume, freeze and resume, etc.

try going to msconfig..go to strat->run type msconfig at msconfig window choose selective startup.. it will ask you to restart..choose restart first.. then when it goes back to your desktop..try to shutdown normally using the start "Turn off Computer ". Check if it will shutdown normally.
Let us know the result. :)

I ran PC Doctor and everything tested fine. Since that time the machine has behaved normally, shutting down correctly and not freezing.

I ran through some of the methods on the advanced troubleshooting page but i am having to work on the computer remotely at the moment so I am limited in what I can do.

If it surfaces again I shall have to get the computer and return to this post (or start another)

    Thanks
