Let me first say that I never use IE7 and that I only use FF and Opera. In fact, there was a page written on this site about how to secure IE which I used to tighten and lock up IE when I first got my XP computer.

I am worried since reading on this site that IE10 is in the works, as that puts me in the dark ages regarding IE. Do I really need to update to IE8 or IE9? Is it a matter of choice or is it needed for security? I heard that IE8 was a hog and slowed down older systems. Is IE9 faster and easier on resources?

I would appreciate any input from IE users. TIA!

PS I was shown 17 threads in the Internet Explorer Forum. How can I see older threads?

If you never use IE there is little point in upgrading :) However given that the odd occasion may arise - Windows Update requires IE - I would upgrade to IE9. As you may run it once in a blue moon the question ......
    is somewhat irrelevant :)

I have no real issues with IE9 bar a couple of web sites not working in it - work OK in Firefox.

IE8 is for XP. 9 is for Vista and Win 7. I would update even if you don't use it. It is more secure then 7 is.

Good point - I failed to check the OS :(

And IE10 will not run on Vista.

Thanks, MrBill, I seem to be stuck with IE8 for my system or stay with IE7, which you do not recommend.

    Your help is much appreciated.

Hi Ann. As has been said by others in this thread, since you are using Windows XP then I would install IE8. Even if you don't use IE you should still upgrade the browser anyway since viruses and other malware could exploit an out of date browser.

Thanks for your reply, Evan. I will install IE8 after I create an Image. This way if anything goes wrong I can restore my computer to the way it was.

I just d/L IE8 and when I started to install it, I saw an option to install updates. I ask myself which updates are they referring to? My sustem is all up-to-date as far as Windows updates are concerned. I backed out of the installation and decided to post here to avoid problems. Should I allow these updates to be installed? TIA!

Yes. Install it and what ever came with it. That is if you got it from MS and not some place else.

It really doesn't matter if you install the updates suggested by the installation or not - as soon as IE8 is up and running you will be offered the updates through Windows Update and maybe more :).

Thanks to all for the help. I installed (with updates) and so far everything is working OK with my computer. Pete, as you stated, this morning I had a couple of updates waiting for IE. All is installed. Wheww!!!!

Now my problem is with FF. I can't get it to update itself to 5.0. I get no updates found when I click on Update.

What version are you running? Click on Help/About FF and it will tell you?

Basically because there are no updates for 4 which you presumably have. Download 5 from Mozilla and install over the top.

Pete -Mr. Bill No, I am using 3.6.19. When I go to Mozilla they only show 5.0.1, which I understand must be installed over 5.0.

I think that question is best answered in the Firefox forum - please start a new thread there.

I have always installed the newer version over the old AFAIK, but I am no expert in Firefox, just a casual user :)
