I'm trying to create a shortcut to open Windows Speech Recognition. When WSR is running, Task Viewer shows the process sapsrv.exe. This executable doesn't show up in W7 search but can be found via dir /S from the command prompt; the executable is in C:\Windows\Speech\Common. Yet when I try to create a shortcut, nothing happens. Can anyone tell me why this is? Is there a way to open WSR from a desktop shortcut? Thanks - edo

Have you tried right clicking on it in Control Panel and make a shortcut? Or drag it to the desktop? It will say Create link to desktop if you try to drag it there.

That doesn't work - Administrators can't create shortcuts to system folders/files, that's the problem. Evidently only trusted installers can do that.

    Try this:
    1. Click Windows 7's Start orb and then click Control Panel.

    2. Check to make sure your Control Panel's "View by:" option (top ight) is set as either "Large" or "Small icons ".

    3. Right-click the "Speech Recognition" icon and then select "Create shortcut ".
You should have a new "Speech Recognition - shortcut" on your Desktop with a Microphone icon. (The same icon as in Control Panel).

That is what I just told the OP and they said that they couldn't. I didn't have a problem doing it.

I don't understand what he means about trusted installers.

Yes, I know one can do that, and iit can be helpful. What I was curious about is the inability of an administrator to run sapisvr directly, rather than having the Control Panel applet do it. This obviously has something to do with protecting the file. It's not a problem and the applet is bypassed altogether if one uses, say, WSRMacros to open WSR (i.e., sapisvr) and useful macros at once.

My apologies for this late reply - I meant to post a while back, but evidently got distracted & forgot.

Re trusted installers: Go to C:\Windows\Speech\Common & open the sapisrvr.exe properties then the Security tab. Trustedinstaller is the only group that has Full Control (at least in my Win7 Home Premium), the other groups can't be elevated to Full. As I said, this is probably something that MS code writers have set for protection, and is overruled by dlls in ancillary apps such as WSRMacros.

Thanks for everyone's feedback, which helped me think this through. I'll be happy to mark my question Solved.

Oops - noticed I'd garbled the file name. It should be sapisvr.exe
