Create a shortcut on the desktop, and give it a name.
This is what goes in the shortcut: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 00
If you want a restart on the desktop, here's what goes in there: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00 -f

    ronnyh...

I use what reboot mentioned...I got my info for this from the Woodys Watch newsletter...

    http://www.woodyswatch.com/winxp/archtemplate.asp?3-n05

I created one for "Quick Restart" & "Quick Shutdown "
    ______________________________

I also created one that I call "Quick Lock "...it's a "lock workstation" shortcut...works great.

This is what goes in the shortcut: %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

dobhar - unlike NT4/2K, you don't need a lock shortcut with XP. Just hold down the M$ logo key on the right of your spacebar and press the L key. Instant lock.

    Ronnyh,

You want speed ? Hit the Windows or Start key on the Keyboard followed by 'U' and 'U'. Shuts down the PC - as fast as navigating that darn mouse to a shortcut icon!

I have made a shutdown icon, but when I dbl click it takes pc down to the "Your Computer is ready to switch off" screen and does not do a complete shutdown - have I done something wrong?

I use Wizmo . You can create a shortcut with the reboot or shutdown switch in the command line and then create a shortcut key for it. Place it on your desktop or in the start menu somewhere. When you want to reboot or shutdown just use the shortcut key you designated. I realize there are ways to do this without the program but wizmo can do a lot more. Turn your monitor off, sleep mode, hibernate, start screen saver, etc. It's free and leaves a small footprint (only 29kb).

Thanks for the link. I have gone through that, removed adaptec and no other apps running - same prob, I only get this from the shortcut not when I shutdown normally - so I will stop using it if there is no cure.
BTW I have to do a system restore from safe mode after it hangs as it will not load XP after the problem occurs.
Thanks for the help though - appreciated.
