To create a desktop shortcut to give direct access to Device Manager ....

Right click on desktop > New > Shortcut and type in devmgmt.msc > Next > rename 'Device Manager' > OK

Just in case you didn't know :D

If you do a search on your PC for *.msc, you will find that most (maybe all) of the files returned will open some app when you run them. On my PC I found the following and every one I tried would work even though I have no clue what several of them do.

UDDI.msc for instance. I could look it up but it's almost more fun trying to imagine.

    admgmt.msc
    azman.msc
    certmgr.msc
    certsrv.msc
    certtmpl.msc
    ciadv.msc
    compmgmt.msc
    devmgmt.msc
    dfrg.msc
    dfsgui.msc
    dhcpmgmt.msc
    diskmgmt.msc
    dnsmgmt.msc
    domain.msc
    dsa.msc
    dssite.msc
    eventvwr.msc
    fsmgmt.msc
    gpedit.msc
    ipaddrmgmt.msc
    lusrmgr.msc
    ntmsmgr.msc
    ntmsoprq.msc
    perfmon.msc
    pkmgmt.msc
    rsadmin.msc
    rsop.msc
    schmmgmt.msc
    secpol.msc
    services.msc
    tapimgmt.msc
    tsmmc.msc
    uddi.msc
    winsmgmt.msc
    wmimgmt.msc

Dang - I read up a little on UDDI (page 15 of the PDF is where it starts) and now I'm really confused.

Dave - quite a few of the .msc files from my system have to do with domain management and would be worthless on XP-home since it cannot play on a domain.

Others like gpedit.msc are unfortunate omissions from XP-home and maybe if a bunch of us (rather than just me being real loud) fussed at them, they might add it in at some point. I'd love to see that and also love to see the restriction to simple file management removed. Make that the default maybe but give the option to use real file management too.

Pete, think I'll start using your method. Just yesterday, I was dragging the device manager to my start menu from explorer. As I was dragging, I grabbed my system32 folder with it. Should have seen the lok on my face...Luckily it was only a copy of the folder...
