Shortcut arrows came back & wont go away

    Using Windows 98 SE
    I used Tweak-UI long ago to get rid of those pesky shortcut arrows on the desk top. Yesterday I downloaded recent Windows 98 security patches & IE security patch from MS. Now those dang arrows are back - but not on every shortcut - just most of them. Went back to Tweak-UI and there was NO change in any setting. tried restting it and it was no change.
    So what can I do?
