I'm looking for a program that will take a long url and substitute a "click here" or something. I send a lot of links and don't care if it's freeware or shareware- I want to clean up my email. Does anyone know of a program that functions like the http button on the BBS? I have Googled and must not be using the right keywords.

    TIA

i've never come across such a program!

However, if you use a lot of links in the same email, you could create an html document with the links and then attach that html file with the links to your email.

i know it's not a perfect solution for your query, but that's the only method it came to my mind so far!

Therefore your html file should look something like this:

    <a href= "http://www.windowsbbs.com ">click here</a>

If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express, it will do what you're wanting.

In Outlook Express new message window, type in the word you want to show as the list, highlight it and press the button on the toolbar that looks like a globe with a chain link on it (or go to Insert>Hyperlink). Then paste the URL in, click OK and the word is now a link.

It works the same way in Outlook.

If you don't have the hyperlink button on the toolbar, you can add it through View>Toolbars>Customize. When you find the entry for "hyperlink," just drag and drop it into the toolbar and it will show after you close the customize window.

I feel like an idiot. I have been using OE for 4 years, and didn't know how to do that, or what the "hyperlink" thingy did! I can't find an icon in OE, but clicking "insert" works perfectly. That is exactly what I wanted to do, and I appreciate you sharing that with me. (Sometimes I make obvious things rather difficult.)

Thanks Ed & Max, too, for your ideas.

To use the toolbar buttons (icons) try view>toolbars>formatting bar. ;)

Thanks, Zander- That I know how to do- but there is no icon available for hyperlinks. Perhaps that's only available in Outlook, not OE. I owe Miz one, that's for sure!

Hmmm...I use Outlook Express and there is a hyperlink button on the formatting toolbar in the new message window. It doesn't appear on the main OE window nor is it an active (usable) button until you highlight some text in the body of the new message.

Yep, Miz, you are right on target, as usual. I dragged out the sides of my new message window and -Voila! there it is, at the end. I have always used a very small email window. Now, because I am a Tweaker ( can't stop myself!) I'm trying to figure out how to dump the icons I never use in the format bar so I can shrink the window again. (No, the icons don't drag! ) Thank you so much for posting back, and clearing up that mystery for me. :D
I appreciate your patience, and you taking the time to help me figure it out.
