I'm running Netscape 4.79, Windows 95, and I'm getting an invalid page fault associated with SHLWAPI.DLL when I try to access any address book information in Communicator. Causes the program to shut down.

Would greatly appreciate any help anyone could pass along.

    Thanks.

    Hi Darrell,

    Maybe this will help:

In case the problem is a corrupt address book, try replacing your address book (.na2) files with backups. If you have no backup address book files, then try this:
(taken from http://help.netscape.com/kb/client/19980911-18.html "Opening the Address Book Results in an Illegal Operation ")

    With Netscape closed:
    - open your Program Files\Netscape\Users\Profiles\ "yourprofilename" folder
    - Rename your pab.na2 file (personal address book) to pab.OLD. Also rename any other files ending in .na2 to .OLD
    - Reopen Netscape. A new address book will be created.

  3. to hide this advert.

    Welcome to the Forum, darrell

I'm curious as to whether or not you may have VuePrint installed? The SHLWAPI.DLL error is commonly associated with this application; however, it usually occurs when downloading image files from newsgroups, when you have VuePrint (or some other image viewer installed) and the image file type is associated with that program. There are conflicts between the way that Communicator's internal image viewer and the external image viewer handles images, often resulting in the crash.

The simplest way to handle this is to uninstall the viewer, and then reinstall the viewer without associating it to image file extensions.

Just thought I'd throw this in FWIW!

    Ramona,

I am not using VuePrint so that does not appear to be the problem. I did try Alice's fix and it did not resolve the problem either. I still had the error message with a "clean" address book. It may be a Win 95 problem and I have not posted to that board yet. Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Darrell

    Darrell,

    Sorry you're still having problems.

Can you tell us the exact error message you are receiving? For example, "PROGRAM caused an invalid page fault in module shlwapi.dll....."

Also, what other applications are starting automatically when Windows starts? Try closing them before opening Netscape.

You can disable many of those automatic startups from within each program's options or preferences. It's a good idea in any case! For example, to keep AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) from starting when Windows starts, go to My IM, Edit Options, Edit Preferences, General tab.

    Hi darrell,

Do a "Find" for SHLWAPI.DLL and let me know what Version you have. Probably, 4.70.0.1155. I'm thinking that perhaps the file is corrupt or outdated. Could be that Netscape is expecting a newer version, therefore making the wrong calls.

This file is also located in your WIN95_20.cab file, if you decide to replace the troublesome file.

I really doubt that Netscape is causing the problem.

    Ramona,

Thanks for the time you're spending to try and help me out with this.

The exact error message is: "Netscape caused an invalid page fault in module SHLWAPI.DLL at 0157:70bdlc8f" and then the registers follow.

The SHLWAPI.DLL version I have installed is as follows: 5.00.0910.1302.

Any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Darrell

SHLWAPI.DLL is installed as part of Internet Explorer so installing an updated version of IE will replace the file. If you have IE5 or higher, you can also try IE's repair option, included with IE5, located at Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Add/Remove, Repair. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177

    If that doesn't help:

    - Close all programs with a Ctrl/Alt/Delete and "end task ", except for Explorer systray and possibly your antivirus scanner, before connecting to the internet and opening Netscape. If that fixes the problem then there is a confilict with Netscape and one of those programs.

    - Do a Find on advert.dll. If you find it, delete or rename it. Also look in Add/Remove Programs for known spyware. Some spyware programs like Comet Cursor (included with some installations of RealPlayer7) are known to cause SHLWAPI.DLL errors.

    Alice,

Thanks for your help. I'll give these a try and see if I can get the problem fixed.
