is there any way I can setup the sharing/security on my printer so that other machines on our peer to peer network can access it without having to setup users etc, ie they are win98 and don't (want to) logon to their machines

Haven't worked with that sort of setup in a while and my memory is a bit rusty but if you can set the printer so that "everyone" has access it should work. The Everyone group is a special, system thing that allows users to connect without really checking to see who they are.

Thanks, I had guessed that group, but when browsing from the other machines the printer wouldn't show, however I've since found that it is there, you just have to type in the path and share name directly.
