    Hi All!!
I want to know how to save files i have on my laptop to my home PC. Here is my current setup.
I am currently sharing my internet (DSL) through a Linksys router (model BEFSR41) between the two computers.
I am running windows XP on my home pc and windows 2000 on my laptop.
Can someone please tell me what I have to do on both pc's? Like I said before I have files on my laptop that i want to save to my home pc.

    Thanks in advance

A convenient way is to enable file sharing
on one of the machines and then you can transfer files. That's the general idea.

There are a number of steps to achieve this:

    1. Enable file sharing on machine A (same menu where you pick protocol to use (if you already have TCP/IP that works fine. On some OS's you don't need this step --it's done automatically.

    2. Next, create a folder on machine A or use existing folder and enable sharing that folder (right click on folder while viewing with Windows Explorer (File Mgr)

    3. Create user login on machine A from user on machine B: (you need username and password). For convenience you may wish to use the same login name and password that you use to logon to the Windows & or Network on machine B. This way you wont have to type login and pwd more than once when you logon onto B.

    4. Anytime you enable sharing of any resource (drive, or folder etc.) there is a security risk if you are connected to internet. However if your Linksys BFR is setup w DHCP so that your TCP/IP addresses are auto assigned starting from 192.168.1.1 etc. (in other words you use Network address translation NAT) then your network is already somewhat safe from hacking via internet. You can increase your security by using a software Firewall like Zone Alarm on the machine where you enabled file sharing.

To test while on machine B click on network neighborhood and click on machine A icon and see if the shared resource (folder) shows its contents when you double click it. If yes, you have set the sharing up successfully, and you can simply use Windows Explorer (File Mgr) to copy files via that folder. When using WExp, you'll have to click on Network Neighborhood in the left window (the plus keys) to open the drive/folder that you wish to access.

    Good luck,

    Dan
