I'm writing this for a mate of mine, so sorry if its vague.

He has Win XP Pro, and shared a folder in the usual way through the Sharing and Security on the right click, he also ticked the 'Make this folder private' box.

He then had to re install windows, and he simply re installed over the exisiting setup, now back in Windows he cant access the folder which was previously shared, and made private, and the tick box for this folder is greyed out.

He also cannot access the folder through the command box, Does anyone know of any way he can get access to the folder?

I've never had this problem, so at a bit of a dead end.

Thanks - once again, sorry if its vague.

    Hello.

I spoke to him this afternoon and he had tried the Take Ownership route, but it still said Access Denied.

Someone elsewhere suggested that converting to FAT32 was the only way past the permissions, (due to the encription keys XP uses) which he tried, and he was obviously able to retrieve the files, as FAT32 passed all the permission restrictions.

There's probably an easier way than this, but he got his files, and is happy!

    Thanks for the reply
