I'd like to hook up two computers to the net using one ADSL connection. There is no need for each computer to communicate with the other in any way.
I envisaged some sort of 'Y' cable to connect the ethernet converter to both comps.

    Any thoughts?

You will need a broadband router, if you are from australia you the cheapest alternative is the billion adsl router.

If you don't want the router you will need to configure one of your computers to be a gateway for the other pc, which means you will need 2 network cards and a port for the adsl modem to be plugged into. Also, the gateway computer will have to be on for the other computer to access the internet.

The 'Y' cable suggestion won't work because you cannot just split an internet connection as you would a Television signal or some other video signal, the data needs to be handled by some device in this case the adsl router.

My suggestion is the billion model, its currently the cheapest in Australia (which I am assuming you are from becuase of your handle) and its review are nothing short of spectacular.

A few places to look at:

    Billion ADSL modem/router Review

    ADSL users Australia
    Whirlpool -Australian Broadband Forums
Info on setting up home internet sharing

    Good luck!

    Several ways but!

First choice Router/Switch (at least 2 ports) combo! Also simplist, almost plug and play!

    Plug dsl modem to router.

Plug each computer to one of switch ports! Wha-la!

This choice gives you more security because of the natural firewall of the router! And does not require both machines to be on.

    Second choice.

Second network card in the one now connected.

    Crossover cable to other computer.

    ICS!

    Yuck!

Not simple not elegant not as secure but is cheap and works. Computer connected directly to dsl will have to be on even if not used in order for other computer to get on the net!

Both options above will allow network connections to each other!
