I'm trying to do like the Big Boys do and run a System File Check. Having a problem. When I start the check I get a notification to insert my "Windows XP Professional CD-ROM." I don't have a XP Prof CD, nor do I have Win XP Professional installed in the computer. I insert the CD Win XP Home that came with this system and the message comes up that I have inserted the wrong CD.

I've done this before and it worked just fine. For some reason this critter thinks it is now an XP Professional setup I suppose.

Anyone offer a suggestion as to what I might do about this? I could go to Dell and seek help. Assistance from this Forum would be hours and hours faster.

    You're languishing here, Mudd.

SFC is a bad idea. It is pretty much useless due to System File Protection. Someone else mentioned having the same problem with SFC----it is a thing best left broken. It will replace updated files with older ones. It is a last-ditch solution.

Do you have reason to suspect missing files?

Do you have an XP CD with SP1 on it?

The restore disk that comes with the computer usually won't support SFC, either.

    1st off I have a question.

If someone does indeed has XP Home installed WHY at a later date does it ask for the XP Pro CD.

This is not the first post that I have seen reference to that.

As to SFC. I agree with Abraxas

It is best left alone. He is 100% correct in the fact that unless the user is 100% aware of any and all updates it can re-insert ( or attempt to ) a WRONG version of a file.

SFC ( in any version of Windows ) is only reliable if run FAITHFULLY after each and every change to the system files. Otherwise it may LIE BIG TIME.

I submit to your reasoning and will cease and desist immediately!

My object in doing this is because I thought it was a good thing to do, simply that. My machine has recently become what I think slower in opening the IE and Outlook. It opens OK, however there seems to be a longer pause before the window shows up, a longer "busy icon" I think I should say. Thought maybe something had dropped over or out or a corrupt file. That's what thinking will do for a beginner!

I'm much slower than I used to be. As the PC follows the same path I assume it to be natural to do the same!

I'll accept it as is, still I curious as to why it would ask for a WinXP Pro CD.

I do not have a CD with SP1. I'm hoping to visit WinUpdate often enough to keep up with the updates. Read about a lot of grief with the SP1 on this forum.

My CD (From Dell) has several functions, Repair, or reformat and reinstall Windows. Several months ago I did the sfc with this disk and it ran without trouble. Will not go that route again thanks to some good advice.
