What you are seeing flash by on the screen is a command window opening and closing. After this happens you should see a File Protection progress window open. If it doesn't open on the screen, check the taskbar and see if its minimized.

If that still doesn't take care of it. Open a command window Start>Run>cmd and type sfc /scannow at the command prompt.

    Hi Rod,
The problem is that XP Pro will not powerdown. It just sits there after shutting down everything, except for the monitor which sits there saying "windows is shutting down ".I have been to every windows help site and Mike Flynn has been trying to help me with this.A friend suggested trying SFC to see if that would help, but it didn't.I guess I will have to go into the BIOS :) and look at the power settings as Mike suggested. The thread is on the 2nd page of this forum under slooooow shutdown if you are interested!
I have done all suggested cleanups etc and it does shutdown everything much faster, just won't powerdown!
    many thanks for your interest
