I’ve had a most unusual issue regarding IE (either MS ver 6 or Maxthon). Many pages won’t load; they’ll just hang; just starting a new browser session often does the trick, but not always. I’ve had several of the dreaded blue screens after which XP restarts and states that it has recovered from a serious error and logs an error report to Microsoft.

To try to fix this I have run scans with my various virus and spyware software (SpySweeper, Windows Defender, Zone Labs
AntiVirus and AntiSpyware and SpyWare Blaster, an online Trend Micro virus scan and CWShredder). No viruses or spyware has been found. All software is meticulously up to date, including drivers and software versions.

I’ve run sfc /scannow several times, which runs fine until right at the end when I get a missing dll error. The I386 folder is in the correct place and the necessary registry entries are pointing to the correct path. Problem here is that this is a brand new HP laptop and HP no longer ships copies of XP with their pc’s; actually no disks are shipped with them anymore, just the option to create restore disks. I have several standalone copies of XP and I’ve tried using those, but no go. This very same thing actually just happened with my desktop as well. I'm stuck and out of ideas. Seems like I just really need one dll...

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

An addendum to my own post...

I forgot to mention that aside from this 1 small, frustrating issue with IE, my computer runs absolutely perfectly.

The BSOD need to be taken care of.

    Disable auto-reboot

When Running windows and it crashes you will get a blue screen and it will
automatically restart, ofter it will restart too fast for you to see the
error message. You could check the error log in this case but that is too
easy. We are going to disable auto restart on system failure.

    1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> System (Windows+Pause works, too)
    2. Go to Advanced
    3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
    4. Under System Failure un-check "Automatically restart "

    Introduction to Stop Errors

"Stop errors in a nutshell are errors that are serious enough to cause Windows to stop. They are similar to the blue screen errors that were present on Windows 9x, however there is no option to try and resume the session in a Windows NT Stop Error (Windows 2000 and all XP members included). "

Could you describe your internet connection: dial-up, cable, ADSL, ISDN, ?

If you call HP tech support they will sell you complete XP CDs, (not Restore CDs) for something like US$45.

Could you run IEFix (uncheck the SFC /Scannow option) to register critical DLLs: http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm

    Problem Solved!!

Firstly, thank you Steven and Bill for your quick and cogent responses.
I did as you both had instructed and the suggestions you made were great learning experiences.
Turns out, it was Webroot's SpySweeper. I disabled it and my browsing issues were gone. Just for validation I decided to do a search for SpySweeper issues and sure enough came across a PCMag forum describing my issued identically: slow or unresponsive browsing and BSOD's.
So there you have it. Here I was on the phone with HP, complaining that I couldn't do a repair install, didn't have an OS disk, etc... Too bad a actually wiped one of my other computer because I couldn't figure this out.
Oh well, computers... gotta love em!!
    Thanks again.
