In my first atttempt to instal IE6.0 my internet connection either stoped or the set up failed. Each time I restart the download and get to the set up potion I receive the message "You need to restart your computer to complete that installation ". I have restarted several times but no success. Any Suggestions. I am running windows 98 Second addition.

Kevin and fellow members please correct me if I'm wrong or if there is a better, more efficient way.......

This type of glitch often happens when an install is attempted and something was left running in the background or various other mishaps. Also the On-line installs are often problematic.

Please see the two links I have provided:
Error Message: A Previous Installation Has Pending Work Requiring a Reboot (Q312444)
    opps

Error Message: A Previous Program Installation Was Never Completed (Q221863)
    oops again

After using either one or both of the methods above to correct problem I suggest you choose the option to download the full ie6 files to your harddrive and install yourself rather than allowing MS' active setup to do this for you.

    The How-to:
Downloading Internet Explorer for Local Installation

To start the process, navigate to the Internet Explorer download site (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ie6/default.asp). The HOW-To below is for Internet Explorer 6. The only difference with other versions will be the URL of the download.

Select the language to be used in the installation and click the button to begin the download. The first file to be downloaded is a setup file, less than 500K in size. When presented with the choice of opening the file or downloading it, select the download option. [Otherwise, the installation of Internet Explorer will be from the Microsoft web site].

After the setup file is downloaded, and making sure nothing unneeded is running in the background, double-click it to run it. A window will open where the user must agree to the Microsoft licensing agreement. Click the radio button to acknowledge acceptance then click "Next."

The next screen will indicate that the site is initializing the setup. After this is complete the Windows Update window appears, which gives the user 2 options of installing immediately with a #1-typical set of components or #2-installing a minimum set of components or customizing the browser. The latter #2 option is the one desired, so check its radio button and click Next.

The next window allows the user to choose which components to download for a minimal installation. In the case of downloading files for later installation, From the dropdown select "FULL ". A default full download is supposed to be done, so there is no need to make any selections, but I left nothing to chance. Click the "Advanced" button.

On the next windows, check the box for "Download only" which will download the full set of components of Internet Explorer. After this choice is selected, click "OK." The component options window reappears, with all components checked. The bottom of this window indicates the size of the download and the amount of time required for it assuming a 28.8K connection speed. Click the "Next" button.

The next screen gives the user the opportunity to choose the dirrectory and operating system inwhich the installation will run under. Change the dirrectory appropriately or make nite of the default location. Check the appropriate OS box then click the "Next" button. Another screen will indicate that the site is preparing for the download. It will be replaced by a progress monitoring screen with a blue bar graph indicating the amount of download completed and the approximate time remaining to complete the download.

When the download is completed. A small window will appear notifying the user that the download is done. It will tell the user that to install the browser, one must double-click the ie6setup.exe file in the defaulted location of C:\Windows\Windows Update Setup Files or in the dirresctory you choose. Note that this is NOT the same ie6setup.exe file which was downloaded to start the process. If that file is executed it will begin the download process from the Microsoft server again. When the download is complete, run the newly-downloaded separate Setup tool in whatever the download directory you specified.

Advantage:You can now re-run that Setup as often as you wish without having to re-download all the files.

    ================

I hope this works and I have not made you take the long way around fixing what may have needed only a short tweak fix.....

    I am OFf and Running

It appears deleing some Temporary files may have done the trick. There were a couple of pending operations key in the registry I also deleted but on face value did not appear to be related. I deleted them as well.

I Dowloaded the execuable as you suggested and am currently in the processing of downloading the setup files. All in All everything lloks good.

Thanks for the quick reply and related support links. As usual the site has been an enourmous help.:D

I would delete the values after first exporting the key as a backup. To export, have the key [left pane] highlighted, go to the toolbar in Regedit at Registry\Export Registry File, give it a name and save it where you know where it is.
Then delete the filenameoperations value [right pane] that you see. If you want to put the key like it was, just double click the exported file and it will be like it was.
File name operations are also done when the file Wininit.Ini exists in the windows folder. If you have ever seen the message 'please wait while windows updates your system files', this is the one doing it. When done it is renamed Wininit.Bak. If you have the Wininit.Ini file in the windows folder after starting windows, check to see if the file Wininit.Exe is present, if not there that is why Wininit.Ini is not being processed. If Wininit.Exe is there, it may be corrupted and needs to be replaced. You can use System File Checker [Sfc.Exe] to replace it.

    Markp62,

Thanks for your replay. Sorry I didn't give more deatil on my post. My friend has Win2kpro sp3. He was trying to install ie6, got the "A previous Program Installation wsa never completed... "message. Tried to use the fix listed on MS website, but he can't find "PendingFileRenameOperations ", only "FileRenameOperations" there. I have suggested him to reinstall win2k sp3. Have not heard his result yet.

mark62's suggestion of exporting any hkey before edits is wise and appropriate. Go ahead and export these values and delete em. (referring to PendingFileRenameOperations AND FileRenameOperations )

Some have also found it neccessary to temporarily move any files stored in */internet explorer/uninstall information folder. Be sure to move these back afterwards.

*Note it is most important when installing that nothing be running in background that is not needed, particularly any virus software. Make sure you aren't running any *.bat file that deletes the windows temp folder on a startup boot/reboot.

Thanks Ann and Markp62, what if his FileRenameOperations folder is a blank folder and there is no value to delete?

Then that is not where the problem lies. That key should be there, assuming you mean a folder that appears in the left pane of regedit.
This is a more comprehensive page on this.

    Thank you very much, Markp62.

The solution is too comprehesive for my friend. I could not try it myself since I'm not anywhere close to where he lives. It might be better for him to reinstall the operating system.
