I have installed (clean install) Windows 2000 Professional onto a Compaq Presario 5010US machine. Everything seems OK other than the fact that when I change my display properties settings away from the default 640x480 / 256 colors and reboot the machine it always reverts back to the default setting(note: it saves the desktop image though). I see the message that it is saving my updated settings when shutting down and also I should tell you that there is only one user on the system so the computer is set to assume there is only one user. I updated the display driver after downloading the appropriate update from the Compaq website and still no luck! Any ideas what might be causing this?

    Thanks in advance...

What available settings do you have after installing the driver (800x600, 1024x768, etc)?

Yes it has all the usual settings, even a few above 1024x768. It only goes as high as 24 bit color though. One interesting thing that I noticed is that when you drag the slider for the screen resolution setting change in the display properties window it does not animate the "view" like usual in the little monitor graphic. Not sure that makes any difference, could be just a quirk right? Or is it a clue???

Maybe something's wrong with the profile you're using? I would try creating a new user, logging in, then altering the display. Log out, reboot, and then go in as that user again and see if it is a system-wide problem or a profile issue.
